Biffa Award - Wymeswold CC & Wymeswold PC

Construction work is now underway on a project to upgrade and extend Wymeswold’s ageing community sports pavilion thanks to a £20,000 grant from Biffa Award, a multi-million pound fund that helps to build communities and transform lives through awarding grants to community and environmental projects across the UK.

The partnership project between Wymeswold Parish Council and Wymeswold Cricket Club had already been awarded £50,000 from Sport England and received other smaller awards, but the grant from Biffa Award is the final piece in the funding jigsaw to ensure that the refurbishment can be now realised.

The funding will enable the club to extend the pavilion, which will in turn help to breathe new life into the pavilion on the village playing field, which was worn out and not fit-for-purpose. All of the improvements will be fully accessible and as well as a wide variety of sporting uses, the design of the new facility means it will be available for a wealth of non-sporting community events too.

Nick Shaw, Chairman of Wymeswold Parish Council and Secretary of Wymeswold CC said:

“We are delighted that Biffa Award has supported our project and provided the funding so we can finally commence the building work as it’s taken us three years to get to this point. The completed facility will not only provide a safe, welfare-compliant hub for a variety of different sports, but it will also provide a focus for a wide range of non-sporting community uses too.

“Charnwood Borough Council has already committed to use the facility for its children’s holiday activities programme, and the East Midlands Stargazers will be using it as a base for their night-time observations and meetings.”

Gillian French, Programme Manager, Biffa Award said:

Biffa Award is delighted to support this project in Wymeswold, which will bring more flexibility in the way that the pavilion can be used. Everyone who plays sport or attends meetings and other activities there will benefit.

“Communities need places to meet, and it is great news that local clubs and groups have already expressed an interest in using the pavilion. Biffa Award is pleased to support such worthwhile projects, which make a big difference in their communities.”

The £80,000 project has been supported by Sport England’s ‘Inspired Facilities’ Fund, Leicestershire County Council, Charnwood Borough Council, the Rempstone Steam and Country Show, Wymeswold Running Club, Wymeswold Football Club and Wymeswold Cricket Club.

It’s hoped that construction work will take approximately eight weeks, so the new facility should be ready for the start of the new cricket season.
