Wymeswold Charity Football Match

Wymeswold Vets

Wymeswold's charity football challenge between the gentlemen of Wymeswold Vets and the ladies of the Loughborough Foxes ended in a narrow 5-4 win to the men after a very competitive match.

The game was arranged by Wymeswold resident Roger Staniforth who plays for the Vets side, while his 17-year-old daughter Hope plays for the Foxes and is also taking part later this year in a 5-week expedition to Borneo as part of the Raleigh International project.

A crowd of 220 came along to see the Vets take an early lead with a headed goal by Richard Bowley and a second added by Mark Dunton . However, Lauren Connell pulled one back with a far-post header direct from a corner but Dave Vickery quickly added a third for the Vets. Barrow Town FC joint manager John Folwell was refereeing and harshly awarded a penalty to the ladies which was converted by Kirsty Matthews to bring the Foxes back into the game.

Kevin Sayce added a fourth for the men, leaving the half-time score 4-2, but the second half was all about the ladies.

Jo Keatley added a third, and Sayce came to the rescue for the Vets again scoring their fifth with a long-range shot to give the men some breathing space. The final 20 minutes saw constant pressure by the girls and when Jen Davis turned in a cross with five minutes to go there was just one goal in it.

Thankfully for the men, Folwell blew the full time whistle to record a narrow 5-4 win, but also great performance in a very competitive match by the ladies.

Hope Staniforth was unable to play due to having broken her leg in the last game of the season, but was thankful to everyone who came along:

“It was a fantastic day with great weather, great friends and great match We raised £690 for Raleigh International and the girls really enjoyed the game. We've already challenged the men to return game next year, when they will be a year older and even slower”
