Jersey Tour March 2011

Wymeswold's group of veteran footballers completed their tenth trip away with a weekend on the island of Jersey from 18th to 20th March. Following a good run of success in recent years the team suffered its first defeat since 2007 as they were beaten 1-0 by local side St. Ouens FC.

The fifteen-strong party flew out from East Midlands Airport on Friday morning and an intended round of golf on Friday afternoon had to be abandoned due heavy rain.

However, glorious weather greeted the tourists on Saturday morning as they travelled to the west coast of the island for the game against another team of veterans from St Ouens.

Wymeswold had all the early pressure in the game with Brian Carr going close, the home keeper pulling of a series of great saves to keep the game goalless. Kevin Sayce hit the bar and had a cludge of chances which were saved or deflected away.

Early in the second half a long-range shot beat Wymeswold's keeper Jim Coggan to give the home side the lead, and despite plenty of chances the visitors just couldn't find a way through. They eventually missed out by one goal to nil in an entertaining game.

After the game the group were free to enjoy the rest of the island in glorious spring weather, before flying back to the East Midlands on Sunday afternoon.
