Cricket Club News Update April 2012

New Season

Wymeswold CC’s new season gets underway on Saturday 5th May with the 1st XI again competing in Division E of the South Notts Cricket League but this time under the captaincy of Rob Pitman.

Meanwhile the 2nd XI will be competing in Division M again and skipper Phil Parkes will be hoping that the side, with a mixture of youth and experience, will continue to make progress this season.

The club has also re-entered a side into the Loughborough Cricket Association’s Thursday Evening League, where Jason Whowell will skipper a team mostly comprising youngsters from last year’s Under-17 squad, but with a few old faces too.

The Under-13 team commences its league fixtures on Sunday 20th May at home to near-neighbours Old Dalby and we are on the look-out for any youngsters who may be interested in joining in to play these Sunday morning games.

Sunday Junior Coaching

The club’s successful junior sessions will continue this year on Sunday mornings from 10am until 11.00am. This year the sessions will be led by Alex Easton, a Level 2 ECB coach who is aiming to introduce some new drills, skills and fun into the coaching.

The sessions will commence on Sunday 6th May and will continue every week (weather permitting) until the last Sunday in August.

These fun-based sessions are open to boys and girls aged 7+ of any ability and the membership fee is £15 to cover the whole summer.

Opportunities to get involved

Newcomers to the village or area are very welcome to get involved with the club. Even if you don’t consider yourself to be a cricketer, we would welcome help in other areas off the field:

  • Our Sunday junior sessions are reliant on adult help, and any offers would be appreciated. For the younger children the accent is on ball games, throwing, catching and hand/eye coordination so if you feel you could help then please get in touch.
  • The Cricket Club also mows and maintains the whole of the Playing Field on behalf of the Parish Council, so apart from the pitch itself the club also mows the banks and areas around the pavilion. Any help with mowing or strimming these areas would be appreciated.

Should you be interested in playing or helping the club in any way please contact Nick Shaw, WCC Secretary, on 01509 880543 or e-mail
